The Laurenskerk renews one of the oldest musical instruments
The Laurenskerk has unique organs. The imposing main organ, the largest organ in the Netherlands, and the neo-baroque transept organ are world famous. For centuries, the organ played a leading role in Western music culture as the ‘King of Instruments’. For composers such as Bach, Handel, Beethoven and Mozart, the organ laid the foundation for their artistic development. Slowly the organ faded into the background, certainly when Europe secularized.
Today, many people associate organ music with religion and consider it outside their area of interest. It is about time to upgrade our famous collection of classical organs with a pipe organ of the future that can be played digitally. In this way we want to attract a wider audience and strengthen our position in the (international) organ world. With this new organ we also give the rich musical life of Rotterdam an impulse. The strength of the organ tradition remains, but combined with the possibilities of the future. Want to know more? Click here (only in Dutch)
