On December 8, 1973, the Marcussen main organ was put into use for the first time and on Sunday, December 8, we celebrate this 51st anniversary!
Making the organ accessible to a wide audience, that is what has inspired Hayo Boerema for twenty years as an organist, teacher and composer. Growing up in Groningen, the northern region of the Netherlands where even the smallest of villages are home to amazing historical organs, Hayo was intrigued by the sound of the organ from a very young age. Hayo Boerema studied organ with Johann Th. Lemckert and church music with Marijke van Klaveren at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He also obtained his Improvisation Annotation with Jos van der Kooy.
At the Rotterdam Conservatory he studied choral conducting with Barend Schuurman. He took further improvisation lessons with Jos van der Kooy and in Paris with Naji Hakim. With Ben van Oosten he specialized in the French symphonic repertoire. Hayo has won prizes at various competitions and festivals in Vienna (1998), Nuremberg (1999), Paris (1999), St Albans (2001), Nijmegen (2004) and Kotka (2005). He has an extensive concert practice with recitals both at home and abroad. He also regularly participates in radio recordings, both in collaboration with various choirs such as the Laurenscantorij and as a soloist. Since December 2005 he has been organist of the Grote of St. Laurenskerk in Rotterdam. More information about Hayo Boerema
